Associate Consultant Biologist

The Neuroscience Division has primary responsibility for identifying drug candidates for clinical development to treat diseases of the central nervous system (CNS).

KEY OBJECTIVES/DELIVERABLES:


* Technical expertise:

* Expertise using in vivo and in vitro electrophysiological recording techniques.

* For in vivo recording, basic understanding of handling of animals, stereotaxic surgery and probe positioning.

* For in vitro recording, basic knowledge of cell isolation and acute/short-term culturing techniques, brain dissection and tissue slicing.

* Discipline/Rigor:

* Experience with electronic equipment, computer data collection, analysis and management programs related to electrophysiology.

* Experience with statistical analyses.

* Good record-keeping skills and a positive attitude toward accurately documenting experiments.

* Good understanding of word-processing, spreadsheet, presentation computer programs.

* Achieve Results with People:

* Willingness and desire to work in a team-oriented environment.

* Willingness to learn skills from and to teach skills to others.

* Good oral and written communication skills.

* Evaluate and Act:

* Evidence of strong problem-solving skills, strategic thinking.

* In-depth understanding of experimental design.

* Willingness to learn new technical skills to address unanticipated issues.

* The associate scientist will provide support for evaluating the pharmacological activity and mechanism(s) of action of lead compounds.

* Involved in data collection/analysis, graphic design and presentation of data and writing of research results.

* The successful applicant will be expected to communicate information to members of the laboratory, and outside research groups.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:


* BA/BS/MS in biology-related field (e.g., biology, pharmacology, biochemistry, neuroscience, etc.)

* Experience with a variety of electrophysiological techniques, including extra/intracellular and patch-clamp recordings using in vitro preparations of acutely isolated neurons, cultured nerve cells, slices of nervous tissue and in vivo recordings from peripheral nerves and/or CNS tissue.

* Prior experience using electrophysiological techniques is required and a positive attitude and willingness to learn new technical skills is essential.

* Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to be employed in the United States. Eli Lilly and Company does not anticipate providing sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H-1B or TN status) for this employment position.

ADDITIONAL SKILLS/PREFERENCES:


* Two or more years experience in a pharmaceutical or biotechnology setting.

* Primary cell culture experience, including generation of stable cell lines and transient transfections.

* Molecular biology skills, including general PCR techniques, site-directed mutagenesis.

* Biochemistry skills, including protein purification, ELISA, western analysis.

* Behavioral pharmacology experience, particularly related to animal models of pain.

* Additional expertise with automated electrophysiological devices, molecular biological techniques and/or behavioral pharmacology is desired.
